Wendy joined the Doctor Who family in 1966 playing the companion Zoe Heriot alongside Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor. Along with Frazer Hines the three actors are considered the consummate TARDIS crew for the Second Doctor era.

First joining in the story, The Wheel in Space, she would meet Cybermen, Ice Warriors, Dominators, Quarks and Space Pirates. But Zoe’s journey would come to an abrupt end when the Time Lords captured the Doctor, exiled him to Earth and then wiped her mind, returning her to the point of her first adventure.

In 1974, Wendy appeared in the stage play Doctor Who and the Daleks and the Seven Keys to Doomsday at the Alelphi Theatrein London. Here she was playing a different companion to the Doctor called Jenny, The Doctor was being played by Trevor Martin. This story would later be made into an audio play by Big Finish but staring her daughter, Charlie Hayes, in her role.

Wendy would return to Doctor Who for a brief cameo in the 20th Anniversary story, The Five Doctors. She has just reprised the character again 54 years after leaving the show for a reunion with Frazer Hines in the Tales of the TARDIS.

Wendy began working for Big Finish 20 years ago, but not as Zoe but an evil character in the 40th anniversary celebration Davros. In 2007 she would make her first appearance as Zoe in The Fear of the Daleks. She would subsequently return many times in different formats to play Zoe, often alongside her daughter Charlie.

For many years Wendy worked as an actor agent, representing amongst others, Nicholas Courtney, Colin Baker and Mark Strickson. She was also the first to discover a very talented young actor at the National Youth Theatre called Matt Smith.

Now retired, she lives mostly in France.

Wendy is accompanied by her daughter, actor Charlie Hayes who is a regular at Big Finish.
